Student Information

To Achieve an Award

Students must fulfil the requirements of the endorsed training package or accredited course, that is, they must complete all competency standards and/or modules specified. It is expected that students satisfactorily progress in their studies. If acceptable progress cannot be maintained, it is incumbent on the student to discuss the situation with the Course Coordinator.

If at the completion of training a student has been assessed as not yet competent, MEL may refuse further assessment if it feels there is little chance of the student becoming competent. If, in the opinion of the Course Coordinator, the student has made a genuine effort to become competent and may benefit from further training and/or assessment, the MEL may provide further training and/or assessment. This will be at the discretion of the Course Coordinator and additional fees may apply. Fair and reasonable fees will be negotiated with the student dependant on the assistance required for the student to become competent.

The student may appeal the decision to refuse further training and/or assessment in writing.

Vocational Placement

Under the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000, the Training and Employment Recognition Council recognises vocational placement schemes and registers and regulates vocational placement agreements in Queensland.

MEL's vocational placement scheme recognised by the council is not recognised outside of Queensland. Therefore, a student cannot enter an agreement to undertake a vocational placement with a placement person who is not located in Queensland.

Student Immunisation

Mater Health Services is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all. As part of this commitment Mater Health Services will ensure all new persons commencing study who have direct contact with patients or clinical areas will be required to provide proof of immunity to certain communicable diseases prior to commencement. This immunity requirement not only protects you, but also those that you come into contact with; making the Mater an even more exceptional place to study.

For all new students, it will be a requirement to be immune or be in the process of receiving vaccinations for the following communicable diseases:

• Hepatitis B;
• Varicella (Chicken Pox);
• Measles, Mumps, Rubella ;
• Pertussis (Whooping Cough) ;
• and to receive your annual Flu Vaccination.

Information on how to comply with these requirements will be provided at enrolment.

We are allergy aware

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction. We want to do our best to keep those at risk safe. Being allergy aware means being informed about allergies and their triggers.

We encourage students to disclose if you are at risk of severe allergic reactions at time of enrolment. We implement strategies to minimise the risk of allergic reactions occurring and are able to act appropriately and quickly in the event that an allergic reaction does occur.

Award to be given to Participants

Awards for courses based on nationally accredited courses or endorsed training packages will carry the Nationally Recognised Training logo. Should a student leave the course prior to completion, the student will receive a Statement of Attainment for any modules or units completed. Requests for a replacement certificate or statement of attainment must be made in writing on the required form and must include appropriate identification. You may be contacted to verify your written request. A fee of $25.00 applies for any replacement qualification, statement of attainment or record of results. A fee of $15 will apply to any urgent requests for a certificate or statement of attainment unless special circumstances can be demonstrated.

Recognition of Qualifications issued by other RTOs

MEL will recognise and accept Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations.

Arrangements for Prior Learning

Prospective students who have worked previously in an industry related to the course, or who have studied elsewhere may apply for recognition or credit transfer for all or some modules or units of the course. Such persons are encouraged to make enquires about the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC), bearing in mind that the competency would need to be current and relevant to the training program outcomes.
