Venipuncture Training

• HLTPAT308C Identify and respond to clinical risk associated with pathology specimen collection.


Course Outline


This training provides the skills and knowledge required for routine blood collection (excluding complex blood collection techniques.)


The course is intended for registered nurses, enrolled nurses, research officers and health care professionals working in clinical areas where venipuncture skills are required. The course includes tutorials, practical demonstrations and hands-on experience.


The units form part of the Certificate III in Pathology (HLT32607) course.



Entry Requirements


• proof of professional registration with the relevant National Board where relevant
• venipuncture learning guide will be sent out to you once you have enrolled. The package must be completed and returned prior to commencing the course.

 

Immunisation


Participants must provide proof of immunity or that vaccinations have been commenced for Hepatitis B prior to commencing the course i.e. copy of blood tests. Once you have enrolled in a course a Health screening package will be sent to you. All documentation regarding proof of immunity must be sent to the Programme Coordinator. Participants will not be able to commence vocational placement until proof of immunity has been presented.

The course will be conducted over two days.

  Tutorials 1 day 8.30am to 4pm
  Clinical Placement 1 day* 8.30am to 4pm

*Further clinical placement may be required if competency is not achieved at no further cost.

• equipment used for venipuncture
• venipuncture technique
• collection tubes
• first aid management in phlebotomy
• infection control/hand washing
• competency assessments.


 

Statement of Attainment


On successful completion of the course, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. For competency to be maintained frequency of practise and re-evaluation at regular intervals is recommended.
