Course Outline
Pathology Specimen Collectors (Phlebotomists) are vital members of a pathology laboratory team, required to possess considerable technical expertise and interpersonal skills. Their role includes collecting blood and other specimens from both hospital patients and external clients for pathology testing. This course is designed to provide valuable skills, knowledge and practical experience for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the interactive, flexible and challenging world of a pathology specimen collection (phlebotomy) or pathology assistance. Mater Pathology does not provide an employment placement service however, as a part of the course, all students attend vocational placement (within Mater and with an external private provider) where there is opportunity to impress prospective employers. |

Entry Requirements
You must be over 18 years of age.
To be eligible for enrolment you must reside in Australia and do so for the duration of the course.
No previous experience or qualifications is required however you must have conversational English and a level of literacy and numeracy to be able to work in a pathology environment. You will need to be able to:
• complete forms accurately
• follow or read instructions
• write reports
• calculate portions and
• estimate costs.
This training program also requires you to be able to use the Internet, complete assignments using word processing and have the ability to learn data entry programs.

Immunisation
It is a requirement to be immune or be in the process of receiving vaccinations for the following communicable diseases:
• Hepatitis B
• Varicella (Chicken Pox)
• Measles, Mumps, Rubella
• Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
• and to receive your annual Flu Vaccination.
Duration and Cost
This course is fulltime for a period of six weeks. Cost of course is $3400.00.

• procedure for collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture
• NATA—accreditation and quality assurance, AS/NZS ISO 2000, ISO 15189:2003
• procedures for handling and transporting pathology specimens
• standard additional precautions
• senior first aid
• communication in the workplace
• comply with infection control policies and procedures
• collect pathology specimens other than blood
• identify and respond to clinical risks associated with pathology specimen collection
• quality assurance, including accreditation to ISO 15189:2003 and certification to ISO 9001
Award
On successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate III in Pathology (HLT32607) which will carry the Nationally Recognised Training logo. Should a student leave the course prior to completion, they will receive a Statement of Attainment for any units of competence completed. A fee of $25.00 applies for replacement certificates or statements of attainment.
